Our Year 9 students took part in STEM Day on Tuesday 19th march 2024; an event organized in collaboration with the esteemed Smallpeice Trust. This event promises to be an immersive journey into the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

STEM education has become increasingly vital in today’s world, where technological advancements and innovation drive progress across industries. Recognizing the importance of nurturing young minds in these fields, our school has partnered with The Smallpeice Trust to bring hands-on learning experiences directly to our students.

The focal point of this STEM Day is an engaging challenge: designing and constructing a wind turbine capable of producing the greatest amount of electricity. It’s a task that not only requires technical know-how but also encourages creative problem-solving and collaboration among students.

At the heart of this challenge lies the concept of renewable energy, a pressing concern in our modern society. With the looming threat of climate change, finding sustainable sources of energy is paramount. Wind power presents a promising solution, offering a clean and renewable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

To tackle this challenge, students will delve into various aspects of engineering and design. One crucial element is the gearing system, which plays a pivotal role in converting the rotational motion of the turbine blades into usable electricity. Understanding the principles behind gears and gear ratios will be essential in optimizing the efficiency of their wind turbines.

Additionally, students will be tasked with designing and constructing turbine blades that maximize output. This involves considerations such as blade shape, size, and material, all of which impact the turbine’s ability to harness wind energy effectively. Through experimentation and iteration, students will refine their designs to achieve the best possible results.

But the challenge doesn’t end there. In order for the wind turbine to operate efficiently, it must be mounted on a sturdy tower capable of withstanding varying wind conditions. This necessitates careful planning and construction, as students must balance factors such as height, stability, and material strength.
