GCSE Combined Science

Introduction

Students who are not studying for GCSE Triple Science will study the AQA GCSE (Trilogy) Combined Science course which is equivalent to two GCSEs.

The courses offered have been designed to make the Science taught in school more applicable to the technological world around us and provide grounding for further study in science as well as future careers. All students have developed a secure knowledge at KS3 preparing them for their GCSE study. Studying Science develops skills of inference, handling data, analysis, and creativity, vital for any career.

What Will I Study?

In Biology, you will study: Cell Biology, Organisation, Infection and Response, Bioenergetics, Homeostasis and Response, Inheritance, and Ecology.

In Chemistry, you will study: Atomic Structure and the periodic table, Bonding, structure and properties of matter, Quantitative Chemistry, Chemical changes, Energy changes, The rate and extent of chemical change, Organic Chemistry, Chemical analysis, Chemistry of the atmosphere, and Using Resources.

In Physics, you will study: Forces, Energy, Waves, Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnetism, Particle model of matter, and Atomic Structure.

How will I be Assessed?

This is a linear course which means that students will be assessed by completing two exams for each of the sciences which are made up of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer, and open response questions. There are also 21 required practical’s for students to complete across the 2 years.

Each exam is made up of 70 marks and are 1 hour 15 minutes long.

There are two tiers of assessment:

  • Foundation
  • Higher

Candidates can only be entered for either Foundation (Grades 5-1) or Higher (Grades 9-4) tier across all papers.

Career Opportunities

Science will benefit those students wishing to pursue Higher Education courses within medicine, pharmacy, veterinary studies, engineering, pharmaceutics, data analytics, computing amongst many other choices. Science provides the opportunity to further develop understanding of scientific explanations, how science works and an appreciation for relevant careers in Science.
