Introduction
Photography is a growing medium in the world around us. It is an exciting method that can capture moments of wonder in a split second. The process of digital photography is coming more and more relevant in today’s modern world, with the skills developed branching into many career opportunities. It is the perfect sense of visual storytelling. The creative potential stimulated in this course will enable you to apply analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to visually communicate ideas through photography skilfully.
What Will I Study?
Throughout the period of studying photography, you will learn how to use a digital camera, using a range of settings and techniques. You will also learn traditional photography techniques such as cyanotype and pin hole photography. There will be workshops in how to edit your images using software, we use Adobe Photoshop to edit our images, and your teachers will show you how to use this software effectively and efficiently. You will also understand about the fascinating world of Photography and the range of work that is created, why it is created and the meaning behind it.
Projects will be teacher facilitated; however, there is an expectation for passion, motivation, and independence by the students. You will need to demonstrate an enthusiasm for photography and be willing to create work away from the classroom. Students are encouraged to attend galleries and exhibitions; by doing so you will build your appreciation and knowledge of Photography. There is no expectation to buy a camera and the school has a set of professional cameras which students will use when in class.
It is essential that students on this course take photos outside of lesson time, as homework. Only choose this subject if you are prepared to regularly submit photos you have taken away from school.
How will I be Assessed?
Continuous assessment is used to assess students work throughout year 10 and 11. You will work either in a Power Point or sketchbook and the work you produce will be used to calculate your final grade. Photography is divided into two components that are completed during Year 10 and 11.
There are two components to the course, we use the AQA exam board.
- Component 1: This is worth 60% of your GCSE and take place during Year 10 and 11
- Component 2: This worth 40% of your GCSE and begins in January of Year 11.
