Introduction

English is a core subject required for future learning and career success. The English GCSEs provide students with crucial skills in reading, writing, grammar and speaking while also fostering an appreciation for Literature and exploring significant societal issues.

What Will I Study?

English Language:

The syllabus includes:

  • Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing: Analysing how writers craft language to convey ideas and create meaning.
  • Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives: Understanding and evaluating how writers convey their ideas and opinions.

English Literature:

The syllabus encompasses a diverse range of texts, including Shakespeare, 19th-century Novels, Modern Texts and Poetry.

Students will explore key themes, characters and contexts gaining an in-depth understanding of Literature from different time periods and genres.

How will I be Assessed?

English Language

Assessment is conducted through two external written papers, each contributing 50% of their final grade.

  • Paper 1: Explorations in creative reading and writing
  • Paper 2: Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives

Additionally, students complete a Spoken Language Study which does not contribute to the final grade for Language but is assessed separately. Certification is given for this component based on marks awarded for the following tasks:

  • Responding to spoken language
  • Speaking Standard English

English Literature

Assessment is through two closed book written exams:

  • Paper 1 – Shakespeare and the 19th-Century Novel [40% of the grade]
  • Paper 2 – Modern Texts and Poetry [60% of the grade]

Students will apply the analytical skills they develop during the course to perform confidently in the final exams.
