Introduction

GCSE Business is assessed through 100% External Examination and is a direct route for A-Level courses.

What Will I Study?

Topics studied in Year 1 and Year 2 are as follows:

Theme 1 – Investigating Small Business

  • 1 Enterprise and entrepreneurship
  • 2 Spotting a business opportunity
  • 3 Putting a business idea into practice
  • 4 Making the business effective
  • 5 Understanding external influences on business

Theme 2 – Building a Business

  • 1 Growing the business
  • 2 Making marketing decisions
  • 3 Making operational decisions
  • 4 Making financial decisions
  • 5 Making human resource decisions

How will I be Assessed?

GCSE Business has two papers at the end of Year 11:

  • Paper 1 – Theme 1 Written Examination: 1 hour and 45 minutes, 50% of the qualification
  • Paper 2 – Theme 2 Written Examination: 1 hour and 45 minutes, 50% of the qualification

Both papers have 3 main sections A, B and C.

Section A will consist of calculations, multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-writing questions. Questions in Sections B and C will be based on business contexts given in the paper.

Grading is 9-1

Career Opportunities

All students will study Business for 5 hours each fortnight throughout years 10 and 11. The course leads to study in Sixth Form for A-Levels. The course leads to careers in any industry in roles such as Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Management, HR Management, Marketing and Law.
