Core Subject Information
Core Subjects
Every student continues to study the core subjects of English Language & Literature, Maths and Science, as well as the statutory subjects of PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health, and Citizenship Education), and Religious Studies (RS), which forms part of a well-rounded curriculum. These subjects provide essential skills and knowledge to support academic achievement, critical thinking, and personal development. These subjects ensure students are well-prepared for further education, careers, and life beyond school.
EBacc
The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is not a qualification itself but a valued set of GCSE subjects that build strong academic foundations. These facilitating subjects: English, Maths, Science, a Modern Foreign Language, and either History or Geography are highly regarded by universities and employers as they develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. Choosing to study the EBacc keeps your future options open, ensuring you have a broad and balanced education that supports progression into A-levels, university, and a wide range of careers. While the EBacc is not a requirement for university entry, it is strongly recommended, as it demonstrates a commitment to academic challenge and lifelong learning. To achieve the EBacc, students must secure a grade 9-5 in each of these key subjects.
GCSE or Vocational
GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)
With a GCSE you gain a grade from 9 – 1 (9 being the highest grade). The course consists of mostly examinations but there are some elements of coursework or controlled assessment in some subjects.
BTEC (Business & Technology Education Council award) or CNAT (Cambridge National)
With BTECs and CNATs you learn about a subject in a more practical, work-related manner. These courses are for those who prefer to have the chance to be assessed on coursework, and who enjoy independent learning and practical activity. Students should expect to be self-motivated and work well independently, when completing BTEC/CNAT courses. There will also be an examination, which you must pass to pass the course. You can achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction. These courses are equivalent to one GCSE. All levels are GCSE equivalent, with Level 2 grades being equivalent to GCSE grades 9-4.
Community Languages
At Woodcote we recognise and value the fact that some students are fluent speakers of languages other than English e.g. Italian, German, Russian, Urdu, French, Spanish, Bengali, Polish, Turkish, Mandarin, Arabic, Portuguese. If your child speaks another language other than English at home and can write the language to a good standard, they may be able to take it as a GCSE.
Students will need to study independently for the exam. The school will supply past papers for students to practice and will pay the exam entry fees, but we are unable to offer any tuition in the language. Students will need to commit to studying independently for the exams. Please speak to Mr Lee or Miss Carolan for more information.
Science (Combined or Triple)
The top 32 students on each side of the year group, based on a range of data, will be offered the opportunity to study Triple Science.
Triple Award Science provides GCSE students with the opportunity of studying all three sciences (Physics, Biology and Chemistry) as separate subjects. This will lead to three separate GCSE qualifications at the end of your exams, with a grade allocated to each of the sciences. All other students will study the Combined Award Science. You will still sit a total of six papers. However, the amount of content you will study is only around ⅔ of the content Triple Science students will learn, and therefore the exam duration is not as lengthy as those sitting triple. Combined Award students will receive two GCSE grades at the end of their exams.
