BTEC Music (Music Practice)

Introduction

The Tech Award in Music Practice is for learners who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge and technical skills through vocational contexts by studying and developing their musical skills and techniques. You will develop your skills in music production and music technology learning how to create and record music, learning how to use music technology resources such as digital audio workstations and recording studios.

What Will I Study?

Component 1 – Exploring Music Products and Styles

  • You will explore a variety of musical styles from the 1950s to the present day. You will understand the key features of different styles of music and apply stylistic features of performance, composition, and music production. You will develop your understanding of different types of music products and the techniques used to create them. You will explore how musical elements, music technology and other resources are used in the creation, production, and performance of music.

Component 2 – Music Skills Development

  • You will develop technical, practical, personal, and professional skills with a specialism in creating original ideas and music production. You will develop your skills in music technology and learn about the equipment and processes in the creation of music. You will learn how musicians share their work and collaborate with others. You will develop your knowledge of equipment including microphones, mixers, and audio effects.

Component 3 – Responding to a Music Brief

  • You will learn about using resources, skills, and techniques to develop and refine musical material. You will learn about how to respond to a music brief with consideration to the commercial aspects of the music business. You will learn effective planning strategies and to organise and complete a music project. You will develop and focus your creative skills and learn how to present your work.

How will I be Assessed?

Component 1 – Exploring Music Products and Styles

  • Coursework assignment completed in the first year of the course. You will create a portfolio of work demonstrating your understanding of different styles of music.

Component 2 – Music Skills Development

  • Coursework assignment completed in the first year of the course. You will create and record two pieces of music relating to a given brief.

Component 3 – Responding to a Music Brief

  • Coursework assignment completed in the second year of the course. You will produce a project consisting of a number of recordings in response to a given brief.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to further education and study an A Level in Music Technology. Following this you may go on to higher education and study a degree in Music Production. The music industry is only able to function due to the team of people working behind the scenes in backline technical support; within the recording and performance industry you can develop a career in job roles such as producer, sound engineer, mastering engineer, and live sound engineer.
