This year’s British Science Week at Woodcote School, centred around the theme of TIME, was a resounding success. Throughout the week, students explored the significance of time in scientific discovery and everyday life through various engaging lessons and activities.

Introduction to Time

The week began with an interactive lesson introducing the concept of time. Students engaged in lively discussions and shared their ideas about time. They then embarked on an “info scavenge,” hunting for intriguing time-related facts posted around the classroom. Armed with this information, students created impressive posters and designed lab coats that vividly captured the theme.

The creative and informative work produced by the students is now proudly displayed in our science labs, showcasing their understanding and artistic talent.

The Universe

Year 7 and 8 students delved into the mysteries of the universe. Guided by Mrs Williamson’s comprehensive overview, they explored how time influences the formation and evolution of the cosmos. This lesson expanded their understanding of the vastness of space and the pivotal role time plays in it.

Natural Selection – Darwin’s Finches

Year 9 students engaged in a practical activity that illustrated natural selection using Darwin’s finches as a model. With forceps simulating different beak types and petri dishes filled with rice, students raced against the clock to transfer as many grains as possible in 20 seconds. This hands-on exercise, facilitated with the help of our technician team, vividly demonstrated the concept of adaptation and survival over time.

Taskmaster

Inspired by the popular TV show “Taskmaster,” students participated in a series of creative challenges that required quick thinking and ingenuity.

Hatching Chicks with Mrs. Smee

One of the most exciting events of British Science Week was the hatching of chicks from eggs. Over two weeks, students observed the incubation process, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the chicks. Once hatched, Mrs. Smee brought the fluffy newcomers to various lessons, allowing students to interact with them and learn about their development. This hands-on experience highlighted the concept of growth and change over time, providing a living example of life’s cycles and the importance of time in biological processes.

Science pathways for Year 10 students

On Monday lunchtime, Year 10 science students considering A-level sciences gathered in Lab 3 for a special treat and chat. This informal session aimed to inspire our budding scientists to pursue their passion for science at Woodcote High School.

Clash of the WHS Science Titans

On Tuesday, the science teachers faced off in Lab 10 to see who could deliver the best demonstration. Students flocked to watch the “Clash of the WHS Science Titans” and crowned the King or Queen of 2024.

Home Experiments with Mrs. Roper

Wednesday’s lunchtime session in Lab 10, led by Mrs. Roper, was all about experiments that students could do at home using everyday items. This session provided students with fun and educational activities to try on their own.

Alka Seltzer Rocket Challenge

The week concluded with an exciting Alka Seltzer rocket challenge in Lab 3 on Thursday lunchtime. Students competed to see whose rocket could take off the quickest, bringing a thrilling end to British Science Week.

British Science Week 2024 was a memorable and enlightening experience, celebrating the crucial role of time in science and inspiring students to explore the wonders of the world around them.
